History of the World Matchplay

The darts World Matchplay is widely regarded as the biggest and most prestigious darts competition of the summer. First held in 1994, the World Darts Matchplay is put on by the PDC (Professional Darts Corporation) every July at the iconic Winter Gardens in Blackpool.

With a total prize fund of £800,000, including £200,000 for the champion, 32 of the world’s best darts players battle it out over nine days for the Phil Taylor Trophy, named after the legendary player who won the World Matchplay a record 16 times during his career.

Women’s World Matchplay

The Women’s World Matchplay is one of the most lucrative darts tournaments in the ladies’ game. First held in 2022, the tournament is a one-day event that is put on by the PDC every July at the Winter Gardens, and takes place on the final day of the World Matchplay.

Although still a relatively new addition to the darting calendar, the Women’s World Matchplay roll of honour already includes a who’s who of ladies’ darts. Fallon Sherrock won the inaugural edition in 2022, Beau Greaves claimed back-to-back titles in 2023 and 2024, and Lisa Ashton joined the list of champions with a victory in 2025.

When was the World Matchplay 2025?

The 2025 World Matchplay was held from July 19-27 at the Winter Gardens in Blackpool and was broadcast live on Sky Sports in the UK and Ireland. The 2025 edition of the World Matchplay was the 32nd staging of the tournament and also marked the 20th consecutive appearance for James Wade, the 2007 champion.

Who won the World Matchplay 2025?

Luke Littler was the winner of the World Matchplay darts 2025. The 18-year-old wrote his name in the record books once again as the youngest winner in the tournament’s history when he beat James Wade 18-13 in the final. Littler also threw a nine-dart leg during his 17-14 victory over Josh Rock in the semi-finals. The teenager set a new record for the most 180s in a single World Matchplay campaign, throwing 64 maximums during the tournament.

Other noteworthy World Matchplay darts results from the 2025 edition was James Wade’s run to the final. ‘The Machine’ defeated Jonny Clayton 20-18 in a marathon semi-final that went into extra legs to reach a seventh World Matchplay final, a record only bettered by Phil Taylor (17).

What is the prize money for winning the World Matchplay?

The World Matchplay darts prize money currently stands at £800,000, with £200,000 going to the champion. The darts World Matchplay prize money has risen several times during its 30-plus year history, with the first edition back in 1994 having a total prize fund of £42,400, including £10,000 for the winner. The latest prize fund increase came in 2022, when the prize pot increased from £700,000 to £800,000.

The Women’s World Matchplay prize fund is £25,000, which is the same since its first staging in 2022. The tournament boasts one of the largest cash prizes in the women’s game, with the champion pocketing £10,000.

When is the World Matchplay 2026?

The 2026 edition of the World Matchplay is scheduled to take place over nine days from July 18-26 and will once again be held at the Winter Gardens in Blackpool. Luke Littler will go into the tournament as the defending champion after his triumph in 2025, with the likes of Luke Humphries, Michael van Gerwen, Mike De Decker and Wessel Nijman also set to feature.

What is the World Matchplay schedule?

The World Matchplay darts schedule for 2026 will be released in July 2026. The 32-player field for the tournament will be confirmed around this time too, with the top 16 players on the PDC world rankings and the next top 16 players on the ProTour rankings on a pre-determined cut off date qualifying for the competition. Keep an eye on the PDC website for the World Matchplay schedule.

Where can I get tickets for the World Matchplay 2026?

Tickets for the PDC World Matchplay 2026 will go on sale in the early part of next year. The PDC put tickets on sale for the 2025 edition of the tournament in February and a similar date is expected for when darts fans will be able to purchase World Matchplay darts tickets for the 2026 tournament at the Winter Gardens.
