Chris Dobey emerged onto the professional darts scene after securing his PDC tour card in 2015. The Bedlington thrower started to show his potential on stage the following year with runs to the quarter-finals of the German Darts Masters and Grand Slam of Darts. In 2019, Dobey was selected as one of the Premier League ‘contenders’ and played a match in his home venue in Newcastle, drawing 6-6 with Mensur Suljovic.

‘Hollywood’ became a regular in the major events and made further strides reaching the semi-finals of the 2019 World Grand Prix, 2019 Players Championship Finals and 2022 European Championship. In-between those major runs he clinched his first two PDC titles on the 2021 ProTour, winning two Players Championship events on the floor. In 2023, Dobey lifted his first major title, beating Joe Cullen, Luke Humphries, Dirk van Duijvenbode, Michael Smith and Rob Cross to win the prestigious Masters crown and earn a full-time spot in the Premier League later that season.

After making his Premier League bow, ‘Hollywood’ broke further ground at Alexandra Palace in January 2025 with a run to the semi-finals of the PDC World Darts Championship. That run followed back-to-back quarter-final appearances in both 2022/23 and 2023/24 and earned Dobey a recall to the Premier League roadshow for the 2025 season.

Why is Chris Dobey called Hollywood?

Chris Dobey has used the ‘Hollywood’ nickname in darts for a number of years. The origin of the Chris Dobey nickname goes back to when he was playing for his super league team in the Bedlington area and he wore shorts and flip flops to a match night. One of Dobey’s friends quipped ‘who do you think you are - some kind of Hollywood star?’ and the nickname has stuck with him ever since. Dobey has played up to the ‘Hollywood’ moniker and for a period used ‘Hollywood’ by Andrew Cushin as his walk-on song for matches on stage in the PDC.

Are Chris Dobey and Callan Rydz related?

Chris Dobey and fellow PDC professional Callan Rydz are related as cousins. The duo are both from the same Northumberland market town of Bedlington and have been playing on the professional tour for several years. Dobey won his PDC tour card at the start of 2015 and was joined by his younger cousin Rydz five years later in 2020. The two cousins have played against each other on numerous occasions on the professional darts tour, most notably in the semi-finals of Players Championship 3 in February 2025. It was the higher-ranked Dobey who prevailed 7-6 in a last-leg decider to advance through to the final.

Chris Dobey and Newcastle United

Chris Dobey is a lifelong supporter of the football team Newcastle United. ‘Hollywood’ has been a fan of the club since he was a young boy and attends matches when he is not playing darts on the PDC tour. In 2025, he was in the crowd at Wembley Stadium watching Newcastle’s historic victory against Liverpool in the League Cup final. It was the club’s first domestic trophy since 1955 and Dobey told the Northern Echo: “I have been following Newcastle United since I was four or five. To be there (at Wembley) to finally see them win something, and to do it with your family and friends, it was just brilliant.”

In January 2023, Chris Dobey won his first PDC major title at the Masters. ‘Hollywood’ defeated former world champion Rob Cross 11-7 in the final to scoop the £65,000 top prize at the Marshall Arena, in Milton Keynes. The victory also earned Dobey a full debut in the prestigious Premier League as one of the eight players selected for the competition.

Chris Dobey appeared in the semi-finals of the PDC World Darts Championship for the first time in January 2025. ‘Hollywood’ had reached the quarter-finals at Alexandra Palace in back-to-back years in 2023 and 2024, but broke new ground as he overcame Gerwyn Price 5-3 in the last eight of the 2024/25 tournament.
